GWs 39 & 40 – Review

Successive midweek rounds mean we’re now four gameweeks deep into what has become a kind of ‘mini’ season. They’re coming thick and fast aren’t they?! The weekend’s goalmouth action was scintillating at times, and it only got better in midweek where records were once again broken! Let’s waste no more time and delve deeper!

For GW39, it was Mike Kokins who topped the Global Weekly Table with a fantastic score of 120, which sees him safely into Club 100 alongside 10 other three figure scorers. Four of Mike’s selections netted three goals, while SIX from Young Boys (30 selections) returned 42 points from the x7 spot. The Swiss Super League title holders joined Werder Bremen (5 picks) as the highest scoring sides for this round of TUG. Together at x7 and x8 they would have returned a highly profitable 90 points! Selecting Sandhasuen, St Polten and Wehen Wiesbaden (who each netted 5 times) in the middle of your matrix, with any four goal team on x2 and x3, would have won the ‘Perfect 7’ jackpot of £1000 with 185 points – the highest possible score since GW19! Meanwhile, an impressive 62% of you scored higher than the weekend’s average score of 55, the best average for 11 gameweeks!

Just 9 negative scores to report from the weekend’s action. It has to be said that most of those propping up the table had some great selections, but without a reliable side in the crucial x2 box you’re playing with fire! For example, Tom Roome would have scored 92 points had Swansea City bagged a single goal, but instead Luton Town’s surprise (and much needed) 1-0 away win disappointed the 9 of you who selected the South Wales side. Sorry to rub it in!

Luton were at it again in midweek (GW40), this time giving Leeds Utd (and the whopping 72 of you who selected them) a bit of a scare by taking the lead at Elland Road, before the West Yorkshire outfit pegged them back. As for negative scores in GW40 there were just 8 of them, the lowest for 13 gameweeks! But Zak Mitchell will be furious with his x2 choice – had play-off chasing Cardiff City (6 picks) managed to net against relegation threatened Charlton Athletic, Zak would have been sat on a lovely score of 114! He clearly had the right idea, choosing six goal Inter Milan (75 picks) and five goal RB Salzburg (63) on x8 and x7 respectively, the top scorers in GW40’s Perfect 7! Real Mallorca also netted 5 times to make x6 spot in the Perfect 7 matrix, with any four goal team in the remaining multipliers enough to secure a magnificent 169 points. But it was Will Bowen who managed to top the Global Weekly Table in midweek with Inter and Salzburg unsurprisingly featuring high up in his matrix, helping to secure him a beautiful 137 point return. Nicely done Will!

Will wasn’t the only player to score high though. Not only were there 51 hundred+ scores, (that’s 45% of you!) we had nine players all surpass the 130 point mark. WOW! We also had a season high average score of 80 points, which 68% of you managed to better. I’ll say it again, WOW!

What a couple of gameweeks that was, let’s try and keep this form up! Be sure to get your selections in for the coming weekend’s fixtures. Early kick-offs include Brighton’s trip to Norwich in the Premier League, while Derby County host Nottingham Forest in a hotly anticipated East Midlands derby! We also have more fixtures from Europe available too, so loads of options for you to consider. Good luck!
